Let’s say you’re off the grid completely and your home is running smoothly on residential solar energy. You love that your panels are saving you serious money — but how do you make sure they continue doing so for years to come? Here are some tips to help you keep your panels in tiptop shape.
1. Make Your House as Energy-Efficient as Possible
Do this before you build any panel. Add insulation, put up double glazing, and use fluorescent instead of incandescent lighting. There’s a reason you have to do this: by making your house energy-efficient, you can lessen the size – and consequently the cost – of your panels. Then you can start to make your own residential solar electricity.
2. Prime Your Panels for Maximum Exposure

3. Count Sunshine Hours During Winter Rather Than Summer
When you calculate how many panels to put up, think in terms of winter hours rather than summer hours. Do you know you get twice as many hours of sunshine during summer? Well, now you do. This part is crucial because if your math is wrong, you could end up needing backup power during winters more often than your budget would like.
4. Keep Your Panels Close to the Batteries
Do this so you don’t lose power in the cabling. Also, make sure your panels aren’t shaded.
5. Clean Your Panels
To help your system generate maximum residential solar energy, keep each panel clean — even if this means climbing onto the roof once or twice a month. A layer of dirt or dust, no matter how thin, will block some of the sunshine you’re getting. When this happens, your panels will be operating below maximum efficiency.
